The name of Tasmania actually came from that of Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer who first reached the island in 1642. He himself actually named the island Van Diemen's Land after his sponsor Anthony Van Diemen. Eventually, however, that honor was given to him when it was renamed in 1856. It is interesting to note that even before Tasman's arrival, the island was actually already inhabited.
