Spending Winter in Australia

australian winter

One of the most common things that many Australian visa applicants would want to know about the country is whether there is a winter. For many people outside of the country, Australia is most often pictured as being an ever sunny place and a summer getaway. However, contrary to this, Australia does have a winter season, and there are in fact plenty of things to do during this time of the year.

As some might have already known, Australia's seasons are in reversed order compared to those in the western world. This is due to the fact that Australia is located in the southern hemisphere. Thus, compared to that of the US, the Australian winter season begins from June to August (it is currently summer season in the country). Also note that the northern areas of the country near the equator does not have winter in the traditional sense. Instead, they have dry seasons, which are akin to those of the tropics.

Also, unlike the countries located in the north, Australia has a relatively mild winter, with the exception of the southernmost regions like Tasmania and Victoria. Average temperatures here can go down to at least five degrees Celsius. On the other hand, rainfall also increases during this time.

So what are there in store for Australian tourists during the winter season? As have been said, there are a lot of activities that you can do during this time. Also, since Australia has a varied climate, you have plenty of options if you want to do something different from the usual winter itinerary.

Since the season will be mild in the northern regions, you will still be able to do almost all of the activities that you enjoy in the summer. Beaches are still quite popular as travel destinations for many tourists, though the water will be a bit cold there. On the other hand, the mild weather during the winter offers a great chance for touring the many attractions that can be found in the area.

Inland, touring is still a good activity for many people. And this is also a good time to do some long distance trekking, as the climate is ideal and you won't have to struggle against the heat that much. One thing that you would definitely want to try is a cross country trip in South Australia. Here, you travel using a four wheel drive.australian adventures

And if you want to really get into winter activities, then you need to head down even further. Tasmania is definitely a good spot for winter enthusiasts. There are numerous ski resorts in the state and frozen lakes are ideal spots to show your skating prowess in the ice. Going through the terrain during winter is also a good activity. St. Clair National Park has many trails for you to try out.
