The Sydney Bridge Climb, One Heck Of An Experience
One of the cities that Australian visa holders would want to visit when they arrive here is Sydney. Indeed, this bustling city right by the sea has become a popular tourist destination for both local and foreign travelers. And with its many interesting features, there will be more people to come here for yours.
Surprisingly, one of the most popular attraction here is the Sydney Harbor Bridge. This 1,1 kilometer stretch of concrete crosses the widest part of Port Jackson and connects the Sydney central business district to the North Shore. The bridge, nicknamed “the Coathanger” for its shape, actually carries three types of traffic. The main road carries vehicle traffic, while trains travel on the western side of the bridge. Along with the trains, a bicycle path also goes on this side, while people walking on foot have the eastern side all to themselves.
The bridge was actually first conceived way back in 1815. However, it was only in 1900 that actual proposals were main for the bridge. And it took twenty years more before actual construction of the bridge took place. Finally, the bridge was opened to the public in 1932. though many did marvel at the beauty of the bridge, never would they imagine that, decades later, it would become one of Australia's iconic landmarks.
And the people who built it would probably be surprised to find out that one of the things that has catapulted the bridge to international fame is the experience of climbing it, something that they themselves probably have thought to be impossible, if not a crazy idea.
The Sydney Bridge Climb is actually a relatively new idea, having been started only in 1998. However, the experience quickly took hold, and soon, lots of local and foreign tourists were booking to get a chance to ascend the bridge. And in just over ten years, the attraction has already attracted well over two million climbers, with the distinction of being the 2.5 millionth one on top going to British tourist Hillary Baker.
For those thinking that the Bridge Climb is only for the physically fit, you will be lucky to know that anyone can actually try out the experience. Even the physically challenged ones are encouraged to try out the climb. Don't worry though, as there is a physician that will be right by your side for the whole time.
So how does it feel to be on top of the bridge? For the many people that have already been there. It would be a once of a lifetime experience. And as an added bonus, you will actually be able to get a great view of the city.
