Immigration Department Plans To Revamp Temporary Visa Program

Because of the country being a favorite travel destination, a lot of people are now filing Australian temporary visa applications. And it is actually not only travel for pleasure as the reason why many people are going to the country. Students and temporary workers, as well as businessmen, regularly enter the country for a short stay.

However, it seems that there would be a bit of a headache on their way. Recently, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) announced the ongoing plans to make large changes to the current temporary migrant visa program. The department said that these changes are intended to streamline the whole process of getting a temporary visa.

One off the biggest changes that the DIAC is planning to implement is the reduction of the number of visa subclasses that it offers. Currently, there are about 149 visa subclasses that the department facilitates under the temporary visa program. Under the new scheme that it proposes, the DIAC plans to cut down this number by half in 2015.

According to department officials, the move is intended to further improve the delivery visa services to applicants. Authorities also added that the move will also help in cutting down the red tape that is common in some of the subclasses. Furthermore, according to Immigration Minister Chris Evans, the planned changes will also help in dealing with the many border security issues that the country is facing.

In order to accomplish its goals, the departments initially plans to remove some of the subclasses that they deem to be redundant. Afterward, the DIAC will proceed to merge several subclasses together into one multipurpose visa type. They added that the actual application processes will also be overhauled in order to make them quicker. Officials noted that the target year would not be easily reached, mainly due to the complexity of the of the visa immigration program, but they are determined to complete it by that time.

It can be remembered that the DIAC has actually begun implementing changes to the temporary visa program since last year. On of the subclasses that they have focused on is the temporary worker's visa. Here, they have leveled the wages that temporary foreign workers get with that of local ones to make a fairer playing field. The department has also started to impose stricter qualifications for those getting temporary visas.

Immigration officials also said that there will likely be some negative reactions once the the new rules have been set into place. However, they assured applicants that this would only be for a short period of time and that, as the system finally fits in, it is likely that applicants will find it more useful.
